The lush, green island of Lesvos is like no other Greek island and perhaps no other place in the world. The Island of astounding natural beauty is set like a jewel in the Aegean sea. It is the third largest of the islands in Greece, with an area of 1636 square kilometers and a coastline of 370 km. The island has a population of 90.634 inhabitants while it is also a spiritual and cultural center.
The contribution of Lesvos to the arts and letters has been invaluable. Eminent personalities such as Arion, Terpandos, Theophrastos, Pittakos Mitilineos, Theophilos, Il. Venezis, Str. Myrivilis, Arg. Eftaliotis (Kleanthis Michailidis), G. Iakovidis and the plastic artist Str. Elefteriadis were born here. Additionally, the Nobel prizewinning poet Odysseas Elytis was of Lesvian descent.
It is no coincidence that the conference will take place in Lesvos. This Greek island has played an important role in prof. Moulaert's research on regional innovation systems in the 1990s. He still maintains a strong attachment and concern for the society and the people of Lesvos. It is also an opportunity to learn more about the rich tradition of cooperatives in the region, the history of its collective usage of resources and peculiar land use rights arrangements.
Located on the Nothern tip, Mytilini or Mytilene as it is also called, is one of the most ancient Greek cities, the largest town on the island and the Capital of Lesvos. Mytilene is also the host to the airport (located approx. 5km form the airport), commercial Seaport and to the Aegean University. The town extends over seven hills and the traditional houses coexist harmonically with neoclassic mansions, Byzantine temples, refugee neighbourhoods and ancient monuments. You can see the official guide to Mytilene http://www.visit-mytilene.gr
The University of the Aegean (UAegean) was founded in 1984 aiming to introduce new approaches in higher education in Greece and worldwide and to promote regional development. Situated in 6 picturesque islands in the Aegean Archipelago, including Lesvos, the UAegean offers a unique natural, cultural and human environment for modern studies in the ancient cradle of knowledge.
